The Gift Of A Helping Hand Charitable Trust was founded on January 10, 2002. The organization was formed to serve the needy, underprivileged, underserved, economically disadvantaged and poverty-stricken families and individuals residing in distressed communities in southeastern Michigan.

Programs

gift8 (26K)The Gift Of Giving Coat&Boot Campaign will distribute new coats and new boots to needy children for back to school and/or during the holiday seasons. The program will serve Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties. The program was implemented since 93% of households lives at or below the poverty rate in southeastern Michigan and other Wayne counties, and many of these children does not have a coat and/or boots to carry them through the winter months, so we seek your support in helping us to provide these needy children with a new coat and new boots for the winter months.
Sixty percent of the homeless population is single mothers with children. 38% of the homeless population is child. The program will provide assistance for the homeless single mothers residing in The Gift Of A Helping Hand Emergency Shelter and other single mothers with children residing in homeless shelters.
The New Clothes&New Shoes For the Kidz Program collects new clothes and shoes and distributes them to homeless single mothers with children and homeless single mothers with children leaving out of domestic violence situation. The program supports homeless single mothers residing in homeless shelters to help them dress for success, while going on a job interview, obtaining a job or attending college or a technical trade school to learn a skill or trade that will help them to start a professional career, which will help them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant.
Our program will provide them with a outfit that will help them to feel positive about themselves and feel secure in the new step they are about to take in their life, whether it is attending school, starting a new career, or going on a job interview to begin a new career.
Children4 (22K)The New Clothes&New Shoes For The Kidz Program also distributes new clothes and new shoes to needy children residing in distressed communities in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan and other Wayne counties. The program was implemented to give the children the opportunity to feel good about themselves and improving their self-esteem, while at the same time receiving new clothes and shoes. A child self-esteem improves when he or she is able to put on new clothes and new shoes. It changes the child's prospective on life and make them feel good about themselves. The program distributes new clothes&new shoes to needy children for back to school and/or during the holidays.
The Gift Of Giving New Job, New Suit Program that will serve homeless and economically disadvantaged men in southeastern Michigan, including Wayne, Monroe, Oakland and Macomb, who are in search of a job, but doesn't have the proper attire to wear on a job interview.
The Gift Of Giving New Job, New Suit Programs is a project implemented to give economically disadvantage homeless men the opportunity to dress for success while going on job interviews to obtain a job in order for them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant.. The program was designed to help low income men residing in homeless shelters throughout the communities of metropolitan Detroit, including Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. The suits are being distributed to economically disadvantage men in homeless shelters, substance abuse centers and other transitional housing for men, who are seeking employment and need a suit to wear to their job interview.
Economically disadvantage men will benefit from the products that are being requested. The program served economically disadvantage men of all ages. The Program is targeted toward economically disadvantage homeless men on the road to recovery and resides in urban inner cities and rural areas.

gift9 (63K)The Gift Of A Helping Hand Emergency Shelter will eliminate homelessness and domestic violence one shelter at a time. We will provide the homeless with the valuable resources, assistances, support groups and opportunities needed to help them to become self-sufficient, self-reliant and living productive and abusive free lifestyle.
The Gift Of A Helping Hand Emergency Shelter will provide housing for the 60% of homeless single mothers with children and the 0.4% of homeless single mothers with children leaving out of domestic violence situations in southeastern Michigan.
There is a greater demand now more than ever to provide housing for the homeless constituency because these individuals needs a mailing address in order to be able to apply for a job, job training, educational training and other human services assistance that will help them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant.
While making available housing for the homeless constituency and giving them the opportunity to have access to a telephone, mailing address, daycare services and job referral opportunities will help us toward our goal of eliminating homelessness in southeastern Michigan, while in the long-term making our project and the issues of homelessness we are addressing a success.
Our program promotes diversity and economic self-sufficiency through workforce initiatives. The program will provide resources for our clients to domestic violence support groups, classes and other valuable human services programs. The program will make available outreach programs for the children residing in the shelter such as after school programs and activities.
Nearly 1 million people are homeless on any given night. Most homeless families who received needed services like substance abuse treatment, education and job training, stop being homeless. Homelessness is a condition that we have the power to end. Nevertheless, on any given night in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan 50,000 individuals and families are homeless. Sixty-percent of the homeless constituency are single mothers with children and twenty-one percent of adults employed in the United States are victims of domestic violence's (65% female, 35% male).
Domestic violence in the single greatest cause to injury to women ages 15 to 44 in the United States. In metropolitan Detroit, Michigan 0.2 percent of the cases are domestic violence's and 0.4% of the cases are chronic.
However, only 1,995 emergency shelter beds exist to serve this population and many individuals and families are turn away every night because the homeless shelter facilities are fill to their capacity. Twenty-three percent of shelter guest are a child who enter the shelter with their families in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan and other Wayne counties. So we seek your support in helping us to complete The Gift Of A Helping Hand Emergency Shelter, so we can provide housing for the homeless single mothers with children.
Advocacy Philosophy
Domestic violence against women must stop. Let us end the violence, afford battered women and help safeguard them against future abuse, mandate restitution and offer resources for independent, violence-free living.
The search for freedom from domestic violence is often a long and arduous process and it cannot occur until battering and terrorism cease. Even then, it is obstructed unless the battered woman can achieve autonomy and self-determination. Please help us continue our fight against domestic violence against women. The Gift Of A Helping Hand Transitional House
The Gift Of A Helping Hand Transitional House is a supportive house that provides shelter for homelessness individuals and families who are leaving homeless shelters to become self-reliant and self-sufficient.
The transitional house give low-income individuals and families, who need supportive structure and guidance, also receives the opportunity to live at a rate base on a small percentage of their income while working to regain independence.
The residents are expected to pay rent and utilities based on their income in order to support themselves, with the guidance of a Case Planner, while working to become self-sufficient.


Children9 (32K)The Gift Of Giving Feed The Hungry Program project will feed over 1000 needy families and 5000 individuals for the calendar year 2009. Your donation will help feed many families in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan, including Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties. The 2009 Gift Of Giving Food Drive collects food commodities, food products, non-alcoholic beverages and toiletries, which support The Gift Of Giving Feed The Hungry Program.
This year for 2009, our organization will be providing food boxes for over 1000 economically disadvantaged families and 5000 individuals each month and for the year of 2009. Without your support, these needy disadvantaged families will not have food to feed themselves or their children. In metropolitan Detroit, Michigan alone 80% of households lives at or below the poverty rate. Our goal is to provide food for these needy families and help eliminate hunger in America and southeastern Michigan.
One million people in Michigan will need emergency food this year, which is 1 in 10 families in Michigan receive food assistance from food banks each year. We do not want another innocence child to go to bed hunger, since one out of every six-child do every night. Many people getting helped are living right next door and in our surrounding communities. These individuals are working mothers and children, seniors on fixed incomes, and others who don't fit the profile of a homeless or destitute person. If we don't provide food for our hungry neighbors, the cost of our community goes up exponentially.
Without food, children don't learn in school, seniors end up in the hospital with problems they could have easily avoided and parents steal and end up in jail, so that they could feed their children. 44% of our hungry neighbors in southeast Michigan are seniors and children. 36% of our hungry neighbors in southeastern Michigan are children under 18.
Our program will also provide food for 60 % of homeless single mothers with children and the homeless single mothers with children leaving out of domestic violence situation, while residing in The Gift Of A Helping Hand Emergency Shelter. Sixty percent of the homeless population is single mothers with children and 0.2% of the cases are domestic violence cases of single mothers with children. 0.4% of these domestic violence cases are chronic.

Twenty-three percent of the homeless population is children with their families. 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime. In 2001, 85% of victims of domestic violence were women. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 2005 report. 0.2% of domestic violence situation against women resides in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan. Requests for emergency shelter increased by 13% shelter requests for homeless families increased 22%.
There is a need for more emergency shelters and transitional housing for the 60% of homeless single mothers with children and homeless single mothers with children leaving out of domestic violence situation. 0.4% of women domestic violence cases are chronic. Less than 10,000 beds are available to house the 10,000 to 14,000 homeless constituency on the city streets of Detroit every night, so there is a great need for more homeless shelter capacity, beds and cots to house the homeless constituency.
